RUST - HOTELS & TOURIST INFORMATION
|
Rust is a little cosy resort-village with limited number of accommodations. It is popular with its stork nests that are standing on the chimneys throughout the town. The old-fashioned, but charming town centre is well preserved and clean. Its walls were built in 1614 to help protecting against the Turks.
The town is capital of the Burgenland Lake District, located in a rich setting of vineyards famous for the Burgenlander grape. If available, try the Blaufränkisch, which is a red wine mainly consumed by the locals and visiting Viennese who flock to the area. Sometimes one can go right up to the door of a vintner's farmhouse, especially if a green bough is displayed, to sample and buy wine on the spot.
The Rust lakeshore resort has a friendly atmosphere, especially on weekends. Summers are often hot, and the lake water is surprisingly tepid. Sailboats and windsurfers can be rented on the banks of the shallow Neusiedler See.
Rust is eighteen kilometers northeast of Eisenstadt, 71 kilometers southeast of Vienna and 349km east of Salzburg. There is no train station, but buses connect Eisenstadt with Rust. If driving from Eisenstadt, head east on Route 52. From Purbach, take Route 50 south toward Eisenstadt.
