Murau is the district capital, situated in the center of the region at 809 meters above the sea and has population of around 2300 residents. Those who like cultural tourism will appreciate the historical townscape and the popular Murauer Schlosskonzerte – concerts in the castle. There are also some very interesting museums, exhibitions and pleasant walks in the historical town. Murau is a small middle aged town, which also attracts visitors for shopping tours. The town is famous for its residents’ hospitality and quality hotel accommodation.
During the winter season, visitors can go skiing and snowboarding in the Kreischberg and Frauenalpe mountains. The famous Murowe castle was erected in the thirteenth century and was once an important trading center.
A very famous exhibition is Holzzeit (time for wood) which also brought popularity of the Austrian town of Murau. Murau boasts some great wooden constructions, a good example of which is the new tourist information office.
