Matrei is situated at 1000 meters elevation and has about five thousand inhabitants. There are unforgettable skiing opportunities in the region of Matrei-Osttirol with the Matrei Goldried Bergbahn. There are twelve kilometers of easy, twenty kilometers of intermediate and three kilometers advanced pistes. Also half pipe for snowboarders, Bobo Kinder land with play-park, conveyer lift and separate area for children's ski school with warm-up area.
The beauty of the mountains in the region of Osttirol is made accessible by a network of well-maintained walking trails that spans several hundred kilometers. Routes are available for walkers of all levels and include easy trails in the valley, trails leading through idyllic mountain pastures and also difficult trails with professional mountain tour guides. In the summer, on the "Tauern trek" hiking tour, one has the possibility of getting to know one of the most beautiful and untouched high alpine landscapes in the Tyrol and of exploring its hidden natural beauty spots in a manner, that is respectful towards the environment. This is a three day trek, about forty kilometers through the core area of Hohe Tauern National Park.
