Hochgurgl (at elevation of 2150 meters) is actually the loftiest village in Austria, away from other claimants. The resort includes a cluster of good hotels, whose owners anxiously await the first snowfall each year.
Hochgurgl Skiing Holidays
However, consider Hochgurgl mainly a choice for a winter visit, as nearly everything closes in summer when it becomes a sleepy little hamlet with not much happening. In winter it comes out of hibernation and can get quite lively of skiers.
This is an area for dedicated skiers who want access to some of the highest peaks in Europe. A three-section chairlift, leaving from Untergurgl, just outside Obergurgl, will transport one to Wurmkogl at 3050 meters. At this lofty elevation, skiing is possible year-round. From a restaurant at Wurmkogl, one have a great panoramic view of the Italian Alps.
Getting to Hochgurgl, which is just five kilometers east of Obergurgl, requires a steep uphill transit that one can approach from the Timmelsjoch Alpine Road. A bus provided by the hotel chairlift authority (a ski bus) makes two or three daily round-trips from Obergurgl to Hochgurgl. The round-trip fare for the run was lastly 4€, although if one buys a ski pass giving access to the local lift system, the bus ride is free. Most new arrivals avoid this bus because of their luggage, preferring instead to take one of the many taxis that make the run frequently from Obergurgl.
As a part of the three resorts complex that also includes Untergurgl and Obergurgl, for more information please refer to Obergurgl!
