The resort of St. Johann in Pongau is located at only fifty-five kilometers south of Salzburg. It is a traditional Austrian town and the most significant shopping and tourist center in the area. Sankt Johann im Pongau has also become very popular for the scenic Liechtenstein gorge, which is open to visitors from the middle of May to the end of October, as well as for its magnificent cathedral.

The ski areas are Salzburger Sportwelt, Grossarltal, Gastein, Schladming-Dachstein Tauern and Hochkönigs Winterreich. Excellently groomed runs, efficient snow-making facilities, as well as rustic, cosy mountain huts, the majestic Gernkogel and Sonntagskogel Mountains are the highlights for the skiing lovers. Additionally, an established tank on the Hirschkogel with around 30000 cub. m. of water guarantees the excellent snow conditions in Alpendorf. Ski lifts take one from the village at 600 meters elevation to the popular ski mountain of St. Johann in Pongau at 1200 meters, where is also a floodlit sled run.
