It is 353 meters above sea level and has a population of about 250 000 people.
Graz is an attractive place to stay for a numerous reasons. There are possibilities for easy day trips into the countryside from here and there’s plenty to see and do. Just a few examples are the Schlossberg (castle), go hiking or hot-air ballooning, or stop at one of the museums. If coming here in the autumn, you might want to see the Steierischer Herbst (Styrian Autumn) festival, which features contemporary art, music and literature.
The name of Graz comes from the Slavic word “gradec”, which means "a little fortress", the small citadel that was built on the hill, which is now the Schlossberg. The town is first mentioned in historic documents from the early twelfth century.
